In the competitive landscape of ecommerce, and if you’re a brand founder of a values-led business, the pursuit of revenue can sometimes feel at odds with what you stand for. How do you drive those all-essential sales, without it feeling… well, just a bit icky?

There’s no getting away from the fact that profitability is crucial for sustainable business growth, but you’re right to think twice — it shouldn’t come at the expense of the principles that define your brand; who you are and what you stand for. But the good news is, it doesn’t need to. In fact, staying true to your brand values can be a powerful driver of revenue in itself, fostering trust, loyalty, and differentiation. Listen to your customers, understand their needs and values, and demonstrate genuine care and empathy. It doesn’t need to be complicated. By simply prioritising customer satisfaction and loyalty, you’ll end up not only driving revenue through repeat business but you’ll also strengthen your brand’s reputation as a trustworthy and customer-centric organisation. It’s a win win.

4. Communicate Transparently

Transparency is paramount in maintaining integrity. Be honest and open in your communications with customers, employees, and consultants. Whether addressing challenges or sharing successes, transparency builds credibility and fosters trust. Even if you need to make changes to your products or services, that’s okay. By measuring these broader metrics, you can demonstrate your commitment to driving positive change while generating revenue with integrity.

Listen to what’s going on around you. 7. Remember your community is open to buying from you

People who engage with your brand and business are all potential customers, whatever the platform — they started following you on Instagram, or signed up to your email for a reason. That reason wasn’t to see what you get up to at the weekends, but because they saw something about your product or service that they thought was interesting. So they’ve already taken that first step of being engaged with your brand, and now they’re open to moving down the marketing funnel towards considering making a purchase. That means they won’t be surprised to see you nudge them along, and promotions and special offers that stay true to your values will be welcomed.

Anyone who unscubscribes? They weren’t quite ready. And that’s okay. If your community is actively growing, there are plenty of other people who are. So take that next step towards giving them a reason to buy — not all the time, relentlessly — but regularly, as part of your wider strategy.
